says air pollution may be killing far more people than
anyone thought. Researchers from Harvard looked at tiny
particles in the atmosphere. The particles are often
produced in the exhaust from cars and trucks,
particularly diesels. Because they're so small, they can
easily penetrate the depths of the lungs, leading to
diseases like asthma and bronchitis. The researchers
looked at five American cities that track the amount of
particulate pollution and were able to estimate its
impact on death rate over nearly a decade.
Airborne particles are not the only pollutant
however. There is also growing concern over
gases such as Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide
and Nitrogen Dioxide. These are generally
produced by the burning of fossil fuels and are
not just considered an outdoor problem. All of
these gasses are very dangerous to the body in excessive amounts.
Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) are produced by
chemical plants, dry cleaners, and motor
vehicles. They are chemicals that can cause
serious health and environmental effects, such
as cancer, birth defects, and even death from
massive accidental releases.

where they can become lodged and the causing

Carbon monoxide is a colorless gas which is
practically odorless, tasteless, and
non-irritating. Carbon monoxide is always formed
when a fuel containing carbon is burned with poor ventilation. Kerosene,

to the development of chronic respiratory
diseases such as asthma and hypersensitivity
pneumonitis. In addition, it can cause
headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea
and fatigue. People who already have respiratory
diseases are at greater risk.
Biological pollutants, including molds,
bacteria, viruses, pollen, dust mites, and
animal dander promote poor indoor air quality
and may be a major cause of days lost from work

cooling, and ventilation systems are frequent

inhaled, leading to breathing problems.
Children probably feel the effects of pollution
at lower levels than adults. They also

People with heart or lung disease also react
more severely to polluted air. During times of
heavy pollution, their condition may worsen to

and chemical additives into our food supply. It

Phase I and Phase II detoxification, to remove
toxins from your body. In Phase I, enzymes
deactivate toxic substances to make them less
harmful. In Phase II, different enzymes convert
toxins to water-soluble forms, which your body
eliminates through urine or via bile in the
feces.
However, this function of the liver can be
damaged by repeated exposure to chemicals and

breathe. In addition, an unhealthy intestine can
allow undigested large molecules of food to pass
into the blood stream. This is called 'leaky gut
syndrome" and can overload your liver's ability
to function properly. When this occurs, the
